The sun was shining and the sounds of the stadium filled the air. It was Sunday morning and opening day at Everbank Field. The Jacksonville Jaguars were scheduled to face off against the Green Bay Packers. Jaguars fans are a passionate bunch and they were ready to usher their team in to the 2016-2017 season. Last year the City of Jacksonville made the decision to remove the love locks from the Northbank Riverwalk fence. After this occurred a need arose to find a new area suitable for the citizens of Jacksonville to commemorate their love. The Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville, JAX Kid’s Mural Fest, and the Jacksonville Jaguars teamed up to answer the community’s call. Individuals can now place their love locks on the fence around Everbank Field, with the first area of concentration being near the West Club entrance. #LockDowntheBank was launched on opening day, Sunday, September 11, 2016. A little about #LockDowntheBank: Last year the City of Jacksonville made the decision to remove the love locks from the Northbank Riverwalk fence. Look for the Cultural Council tent at every home game. We will have locks available for a small donation, with proceeds going to the Jaguars Foundation. Individuals are invited to place their customized locks on the stadium’s fence. The fence is accessible to the public even even on non game days. Nicole Holderbaum, who paints under the moniker Nico Suave, constructed an 8’x16′ mural wall and outlined the words “Lock Down the Bank” on the boards. Bowls of paint were placed in front of the wall and individuals passing by were invited to participate in painting the mural. Locks, paint markers, and spray paint were available at the Cultural Council’s tent. Individuals were encouraged to customize and decorate their locks before securing them to the fence. Many participants decorated their locks with names, initials, or special dates. Mayor Lenny Curry’s wife and son stopped by to help #LockDowntheBank. We even had a few giveaways throughout the day, which we promoted through our Instagram page. For the first giveaway we secured a pair of tickets to the fence and waited for one of our Instagram followers to see the post and find the tickets. The second giveaway came as a result of the Jaguar’s Defensive End Donte Fowler giving the Cultural Council two tickets to giveaway to support #LockDowntheBank. The first person to stop by our tent and say “Donte Fowler” received the tickets. We appreciate all the support and participation we received on Sunday as we launched #LockDowntheBank. You will find the Cultural Council tent at every home game. We encourage you to participate by securing a personalized lock to the stadium’s fence.
